- Key fact: A physiotherapist pays the HCPC £123.34 a year, collected as £246.68 for each two-year cycle, and a chartered member practising in the UK pays the CSP £470.04 in 2026 and £480.84 from 1 January 2027. A clinic of three chartered physiotherapists with a £52 ICO fee pays £1,832.14 in 2026 and £1,864.54 in 2027, and a standalone physiotherapy service does not register with the CQC for treatment of disease, disorder or injury.

A physiotherapist in the UK pays the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) £123.34 a year to stay on its Register. A chartered physiotherapist practising in the UK also pays the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy (CSP) £470.04 in 2026, and £480.84 from 1 January 2027.

For a private clinic with three chartered physiotherapists and a £52 fee to the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO), that comes to £1,832.14 in 2026 and £1,864.54 in 2027. Every figure below was read on the body's own page on 1 October 2026.

## HCPC: one fee, collected every two years

| Fee | Amount |
|---|---|
| Registration and renewal, a year | £123.34 |
| The same for the two-year cycle | £246.68 |
| New UK graduate, each of the first two professional years | £61.67 |
| Readmission after coming off the Register | £185.01, paid with the registration fee |

These rates came into effect on 29 April 2025. Each profession renews in its own three-month window, and the HCPC says the windows "are the same every two years". The next one for physiotherapists opens on 1 February 2028 and closes on 30 April 2028.

Pay £246.68 in full by card, or by direct debit in eight instalments across the two years. Each year the first collection is £30.88 and the next three are £30.82: £30.88 + 3 × £30.82 = £123.34.

A registrant who does not finish the renewal before the deadline is removed from the Register and, in the HCPC's words, "must cease practising and using the protected titles". The HCPC does not charge the £185.01 readmission fee if the application arrives within one month of the window closing, but the registration fee is still due.

### The rise that has been proposed

The HCPC Council agreed on 26 March 2026 to consult on a rise of £5.06, to £128.40 a year, "phased in over two years from April 2027". The consultation ran from 28 April to 17 July 2026. We found no decision on the HCPC's pages on 1 October 2026. For three physiotherapists, £128.40 would be £385.20 a year, which is £15.18 more than now.

## CSP: a choice, with insurance inside it

The HCPC fee is the one a physiotherapist cannot practise without. The HCPC also says: "You are required to have a professional indemnity arrangement in place as a condition of your registration", and that a registrant who is self-employed or in independent practice "will need to make your own professional indemnity arrangements".

CSP membership is one way to meet that. The CSP lists "Up to £10 million of professional liability insurance cover" among the benefits for members practising in the UK, with terms and conditions. The policy terms were not on the pages we read, so ask the CSP whether the cover reaches the clinic as a business as well as each member.

| Chartered member | 2026, a year | 2027, a year | 2027, a month |
|---|---|---|---|
| Practising in the UK | £470.04 | £480.84 | £40.07 |
| Not practising for now | £216.00 | £220.92 | £18.41 |

The CSP calls the 2027 change a 2.3 per cent rise. For a member practising in the UK it is £10.80 a year, or 90p a month. New chartered members get their first three months free.

One figure on the CSP's site disagrees with the rest. Its news item of 30 September 2026 gives the new rate as £480.04. The same item states the increase as £10.80 on £470.04, the rates table says £480.84, and 12 × £40.07 is £480.84. We have used the table.

## ICO and CQC

The ICO data protection fee is £52 for an organisation with turnover of £632,000 or less, or no more than 10 members of staff. The next tier is £78. Paying by direct debit takes £5 off. The [dental regulators' fees guide](https://aeolookup.com/clinics/cqc-gdc-ico-fees-dental-practice-2026-27-yearly-cost/) sets out how staff are counted.

A standalone physiotherapy clinic has no Care Quality Commission (CQC) fee for its treatment work. The CQC's scope guidance for the regulated activity "Treatment of disease, disorder or injury" lists physiotherapists among the professionals the regulations do not include, and says: "If you are one of these professionals and you run a standalone treatment service, you do not need to register for Treatment of disease, disorder or injury."

That sentence covers one regulated activity. The same page says a team that includes a listed professional, such as a doctor or a nurse, is in scope, so a clinic that employs one has to check again.

## The worked example

Three chartered physiotherapists, all practising in the UK, turnover under £632,000.

| Fee | Sum | 2026 | 2027 |
|---|---|---|---|
| HCPC | 3 × £123.34 | £370.02 | £370.02 |
| CSP | 3 × £470.04, then 3 × £480.84 | £1,410.12 | £1,442.52 |
| ICO, lowest tier | | £52.00 | £52.00 |
| Total | | £1,832.14 | £1,864.54 |

That is £593.38 for each physiotherapist in 2026 and £604.18 in 2027, plus the clinic's £52. The year-on-year rise is £32.40, which is 3 × £10.80.

Only the £52 is billed to the clinic. The HCPC fee and the CSP subscription belong to the registrant, and whether the clinic pays them for employed staff is a matter for the employment contract. Both bodies say a UK taxpayer may be able to claim tax relief on the fee.

For scale, the three-surgery dental practice in that guide pays its regulators £4,472 a year for 11 registrants.

## Dates for the diary

| Date | What happens |
|---|---|
| 1 January 2027 | CSP 2027 rates apply |
| 1 February 2028 | HCPC renewal window opens for physiotherapists |
| 30 April 2028 | Renewal deadline. A registrant who has not renewed is removed |

## What is not in these figures

Practice software for a clinic of this size is priced by practitioner, and the figures are in [practice management software prices](https://aeolookup.com/clinics/dental-practice-management-software-prices-published/). Patient records are special category data whichever profession holds them, so the guide to [AI and patient data](https://aeolookup.com/clinics/ai-patient-data-dental-practice-gdpr-dpia/) applies to a physiotherapy clinic as written.

We did not read other insurers' prices, so we cannot say whether separate cover costs more or less than CSP membership.

A GDC-registered professional, or in a physiotherapy clinic an HCPC-registered one, or the practice manager reviews anything a tool drafts before it reaches a patient. This page is general information, not clinical or legal advice.

## Short answers from this page

**How much does HCPC registration cost a physiotherapist in 2026?** A physiotherapist pays the HCPC £123.34 a year, collected as £246.68 for each two-year cycle or in eight direct debit instalments. A new UK graduate pays £61.67 a year for the first two professional years. The HCPC consulted in 2026 on a rise to £128.40, phased in from April 2027, and had published no decision by 1 October 2026.

**Does a private physiotherapy clinic need to register with the CQC?** Not for its treatment work, if it is a standalone physiotherapy service. The CQC scope guidance, updated 27 August 2026, says physiotherapists are not among the professionals listed for the regulated activity "Treatment of disease, disorder or injury". A clinic that employs a listed professional, such as a doctor or a nurse, has to check again.
