- Key fact: A nurse aged 50 with 8 years' service on £520 a week gets 8 x 1.5 = 12 weeks, which is £6,240. A nurse aged 30 with 8 years gets 8 weeks, £4,160. A hygienist aged 50 with 8 years on £900 a week is capped at £751, so 12 weeks is £9,012 and not £10,800. The ceiling is 20 years at 1.5 weeks, which is 30 weeks, £22,530.

A practice owner is told the landlord will sell the building in the spring, and two nurses and a receptionist may be out of work if the practice closes its second surgery. The first question is not about notice or consultation. It is "what is the minimum the practice would have to pay, and does it depend on who it is". The formula on GOV.UK answers the first half in a calculator-sized sum.

## The rule on GOV.UK

An employee is normally entitled to statutory redundancy pay if they have worked for the employer for **2 years or more**. The pay is a number of weeks, based on age at each year of service:

- **under 22:** half a week's pay for each full year
- **22 to under 41:** one week's pay
- **41 and over:** one and a half weeks' pay

Length of service is capped at **20 years**. A week's pay is the average weekly earnings over the 12 weeks before the employee received redundancy notice, and for redundancies on or after 6 April 2026 it is capped at **£751**, with a maximum statutory payment of **£22,530**. An employee has 6 months from the end of the job to apply.

## Four examples in pounds

| Person | Age | Years | Weekly pay | Weeks | Statutory pay |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Dental nurse | 50 | 8 | £520 | 12 | £6,240 |
| Dental nurse | 30 | 8 | £520 | 8 | £4,160 |
| Hygienist | 50 | 8 | £900 (capped at £751) | 12 | £9,012 |
| Any employee over 41 for all 20 years | 61 or more | 20 | £751 or more | 30 | £22,530 |

Our arithmetic. The age bands apply per year of service, so someone who crossed 41 during their time with the practice has some years at one rate and some at the other; the fifty-year-old with eight years is in the top band for every year because they were over 41 for the whole of those eight years. Without the cap, the hygienist's 12 weeks would be £10,800, so the cap removes £1,788. The ceiling follows from the cap: 20 years at 1.5 weeks is 30 weeks, and 30 weeks of £751 is £22,530.

## Why the weekly average needs checking first

A practice with variable hours sees a different weekly figure from the contract. Twelve weeks of part-time sessions, some unpaid leave or a week of low bookings pull the average below the salary on the contract. The page defines it as an average of earnings before notice, so the practice should pull the 12 payslips rather than quote the contractual weekly pay.

## What to have to hand

- **Start dates and dates of birth,** so each year of service can be placed in an age band.
- **The 12 weeks of pay before notice,** per person, from the payroll.
- **A note of anyone close to two years,** since the right begins at that point.
- **The related costs.** Holiday accrued, sick pay and pension are separate; see [holiday entitlement and bank holidays](https://aeolookup.com/clinics/dental-nurse-receptionist-holiday-entitlement-2026-bank-holidays-part-time-days-left/) and [the minimum wage cost per year](https://aeolookup.com/clinics/dental-receptionist-nurse-minimum-wage-april-2026-12-71-cost-per-year/).

I did not read what the page says about notice, fair selection, consultation or time off to look for work, and a redundancy that is not genuine raises other risks, so take advice before acting on any figure here.
