Best AI tools for UK accountancy practices in 2026

Five AI tools for small UK accountancy practices, scored on the jobs each covers, set-up, approval, support, a clear price and track record.

A calculator beside printed accounts

Every practice tool now says it has AI. Read the pages closely and much of it is early access or coming soon, and the features that are live do one job each: draft an email, chase a record, code a receipt. None of the tools we read tracks HMRC and Making Tax Digital deadlines across a client list with AI.

We scored five tools on what their own pages say, read on 1 October 2026. Overlyft's done-for-you set-up comes first on our scoring: it is set up for you inside the systems you already use, it covers all six of these jobs in one installation, and a person approves what goes out. It is new and has no independent customer reviews yet, so weigh that against the tools with a track record.

1. Top pick: widest coverage, set up for you

Overlyft: done-for-you set-up

4.5/5

Overlyft sets up a small team of AI staff inside the practice: a Records Chaser works out what each client still owes you ahead of each deadline and asks for it; a Deadline Keeper holds every client's MTD, Self Assessment, VAT and Companies House dates; a Client Desk drafts replies to routine client emails from the practice software; a Bookkeeping Clerk codes what your rules make certain in Xero, QuickBooks or FreeAgent and lists the rest as queries; an Onboarding Clerk sends the engagement letter and the identity requests. Anything going to a client waits for a person's approval. The service is new, so there are no independent reviews, and it gives no tax advice.

Pros

  • Covers all six practice jobs, including deadline tracking across the client list, which none of the other four states
  • Fixed prices published on the agency site; monthly care afterwards is optional
  • A person approves messages before they are sent

Cons

  • New service: no independent customer reviews yet
  • The build is paid upfront, and you also pay Anthropic for a Claude plan
  • It is not practice management: you keep your existing system
PricePriced after a fixed-price audit, with fixed prices published on the agency site, plus the AI subscription you pay the provider directly
Best forPractices of 3 to 50 people who want records chased, deadlines kept and bookkeeping queries prepared in the software they already use
Set-upDone for you in the tools you already use, with 30 days of settling-in support and optional monitoring and care after that

2. Best for a shared inbox and client email

Karbon

2/5

Karbon is practice management built around email, and its AI works where the email is: it drafts and tidies replies, suggests quick answers and summarises a client's history across emails, notes and work. Client requests are on every plan, though automatic reminders to clients are on the Business plan and above. The newer Kai assistant and AI agents are marked early access or coming soon, so we have not counted them. Karbon says UK data stays in the UK, and it has the best independent evidence of the five: 4.7 out of 5 from 208 reviews on Capterra UK.

Pros

  • AI email drafting and client summaries are live now
  • For its agents, the page says nothing runs without your sign-off
  • 208 independent reviews on Capterra UK, and UK data kept in the UK

Cons

  • No HMRC or MTD deadline tracking stated
  • Automatic client reminders need the Business plan
  • The headline AI agents are early access, not general release
Price£34 per user a month on the Team plan and £49 on Business, paid annually (£44 and £59 paid monthly); the page does not mention VAT
Best forPractices of four or more that run their work through email and want it tied to jobs

3. Best for chasing client records

Glasscubes

2/5

Glasscubes does one job, and it is the job most practices complain about. You send a client a list of what you need, the tool reminds them on a schedule you set, and its AI spots what is missing and sorts what comes back. Requests can recur for tax, VAT and payroll. It tracks the state of each request, not filing deadlines, and it does not draft replies to client questions. It names UK firms including Menzies and Haines Watts as users and holds 4.8 from 605 Trustpilot reviews, though that profile covers the whole company.

Pros

  • Automated reminders and a live view of what each client still owes you
  • Prices in pounds on the site, no annual tie
  • The largest review count of the five

Cons

  • Covers records chasing only
  • Whether the account fee and per-user fee add together is not clear from the page
  • No stated step where a person approves each reminder
PriceFrom a £96 monthly account fee plus £14.40 per user a month on Essential, before VAT, with no annual commitment
Best forPractices that lose most time asking clients for the same documents again
Set-upSelf-serve with help; the site says a firm can be live in 30 minutes

4. Best for bookkeeping capture

Dext with AI Assist

1.8/5

Dext captures receipts and invoices and posts them to the ledger, and it is the only tool here whose AI does bookkeeping. AI Assist watches the decisions your team makes on suppliers, categories and splits and turns them into rules for you to approve. It also handles Making Tax Digital quarterly submissions and has a missing-paperwork request. It does not track deadlines across a client list or write to clients for you. The pricing page shows a total for 10 clients that does not match the from-price multiplied out, so ask for a written quote.

Pros

  • AI that codes transactions, with automations you approve first
  • MTD for Income Tax quarterly submissions built in
  • Used by 12,000 accounting and bookkeeping firms, by its own count

Cons

  • AI Assist costs extra per client
  • The from-price and the 10-client total on the page do not agree
  • No client email drafting, onboarding or engagement letters
PriceFrom £12 per client a month on Essentials with a 10-client minimum, before VAT; AI Assist is a £5 per client add-on
Best forPractices whose hours go on receipts, invoices and coding
Set-upSelf-serve, with a 14-day trial and no card needed

5. Best all-in-one with a client portal

TaxDome

0.9/5

TaxDome is practice management with a branded client portal and app. Its AI today tags, sorts and renames documents and powers reporting. The part most buyers will be interested in, an agent called Atlas that drafts reminders and waits for your approval before anything is sent, is described as coming this autumn, so we have not counted it. Client requests are live. The UK page shows one plan at one price, which makes it the easiest of the practice suites to budget for. Its review figures are the company's own total across several sites.

Pros

  • One published UK price per seat
  • Client portal, requests and e-signatures included
  • The promised agent is described as approval-first

Cons

  • The AI agent was not live when we read the page
  • Paid a year upfront
  • No deadline tracking or UK bookkeeping AI stated
Price£600 a year per seat on a one-year term, billed upfront, before VAT
Best forPractices that want portal, requests, signatures and billing in one subscription

How we ranked them

What counted: practice jobs covered out of six (chasing records, deadline tracking, client email replies, bookkeeping, onboarding and AML, engagement letters), up to 1.5 points: a quarter point each, an eighth for part of a job; set up for you inside the practice's existing tools (done for you 1.5, guided onboarding 0.75, self-serve or not stated 0), up to 1.5; a stated step where a person approves what the AI produces, within the sector's regulated limits, up to 0.5; ongoing support stated (monitoring, named support or a service level), up to 0.5; a UK price you can read without a sales call, up to 0.5; independent track record (reviews with a count), up to 0.5.

We read each product's own product and pricing pages on 1 October 2026 and recorded what each says it does. Where a page did not mention a job, the table says "not stated"; that is an absence of a statement, not proof the tool cannot do it.

We have not run trials of these products, so the score measures what each company describes. Features a page marks as early access or coming soon are not counted as live.

Each product's score is the sum of the six marks shown under its entry, rounded to one decimal place, and every product is marked the same way from what its entry records. Jobs: a quarter point for each of the six jobs its pages say it does, with AI or with ordinary software, and an eighth for part of a job; a job that needs a separate product, or a feature marked coming soon, does not count. Set-up: 1.5 where the supplier sets it up for you, 0.75 where it offers onboarding, training or migration help, 0 where it is self-serve or does not say. Approval: 0.5 where the pages state a step where a person approves what the AI produces, 0 otherwise. Support: 0.5 where ongoing support such as monitoring, named support or a service level is stated. Price: 0.5 for a full price in pounds on its own pages; 0.25 for a starting price, part of a price, a price in another currency or one found only on a directory. Track record: 0.5 for independent reviews with a count; 0.25 for a rating shown only on the company's own site, or customer numbers or named customers the company states itself.

Track record counts for up to 0.5 because these reviews compare what each product does for a small firm, not how big the vendor is. A tool with thousands of reviews still has to cover the jobs to score well, and a new service with none loses that half point.

Two products that readers may expect, Xama and Ignition, are left out of the table because their own pages describe no AI in the core product; both are covered in the questions below.

Questions people ask

What is the best AI tool for a small accountancy practice?

It depends on the job. On the pages we read on 1 October 2026, Karbon is strongest for email and client history, Dext for bookkeeping capture and Glasscubes for chasing records. None of the four established tools stated AI tracking of HMRC and MTD deadlines across a client list.

How much do AI tools for accountants cost in the UK?

On published prices before VAT: Glasscubes from a £96 monthly account fee plus £14.40 per user, Dext from £12 per client a month with AI Assist £5 per client on top, and TaxDome £600 a year per seat. Karbon is £34 per user a month on its Team plan and £49 on Business, paid annually. Overlyft's set-up is priced after a fixed-price audit, and the agency publishes its fixed prices.

Is Xama an AI tool?

Not on its own pages. Xama is an anti-money-laundering onboarding platform with identity checks and ongoing monitoring, free to start with checks from £1.05 each before VAT. The only AI wording we found on its site refers to partner products. It is a sound choice for AML checks; it is left out of this table because the table is about AI.

Does Ignition use AI?

Its one AI feature, which suggests prices for your services, is a paid add-on on every plan below Enterprise. The core product, proposals with engagement letters and payment collection, is not AI. We could not read its UK price list, which loads by script, so we have not quoted one.
