Best AI tools for small UK law firms in 2026

Six AI tools for a high-street law firm, scored on the jobs each covers, set-up, solicitor approval, support, a clear price and track record.

An office desk with files

Most legal AI is built for drafting and research, and most of it is sold to large firms by quote. A high-street practice doing conveyancing, probate and family work has a different problem: clients who want an update, files that need opening properly, and a phone that rings while the fee earner is on another call. Only some of the tools below touch that.

We scored six tools on what their own pages say, read on 1 October 2026. Overlyft's done-for-you set-up comes first on our scoring: it is set up for you inside the systems you already use, it covers all six of these jobs in one installation, and a person approves what goes out. It is new and has no independent customer reviews yet, so weigh that against the tools with a track record. Whatever you buy, the SRA's warning notice of 17 August 2026 leaves the firm accountable for work done through AI, so a solicitor reviews every output.

1. Top pick: best for client updates, chasing and file opening on the system you have

Overlyft: done-for-you set-up

4.5/5

Overlyft sets up a small team of AI staff inside the firm: a Matter Updater drafts each client's update on the firm's update day from the stage of the matter and the chase log; a Chaser lists every file waiting on someone else and drafts the chaser; a Drafting Clerk prepares first drafts of routine letters and documents from your precedents; a Research Clerk writes a first-pass note listing the sources to read; a Notes Clerk turns dictation and recorded meetings into attendance notes; a File Opener runs the checklist on each new matter; a Call Handler takes messages and books consultations, giving no advice. A supervising solicitor reviews every draft before it reaches a client or the file, and the firm stays accountable for it. The service is new, with no independent reviews.

Pros

  • Covers all six firm jobs, built around the update and chasing work the Legal Ombudsman sees most complaints about
  • Works with your existing case management and email
  • Every draft waits for a supervising solicitor's approval

Cons

  • New service: no independent customer reviews yet
  • Research notes are a first pass: a solicitor checks every source before relying on it
  • Phone answering runs on a voice service you pay for directly, as with the Claude plan
  • The build is paid upfront, and you also pay Anthropic for a Claude plan
PricePriced after a fixed-price audit, with fixed prices published on the agency site, plus the AI subscription you pay the provider directly
Best forFirms of 3 to 50 people who want weekly updates, dated chasers and file-opening checks prepared without changing case management
Set-upDone for you in the tools you already use, with 30 days of settling-in support and optional monitoring and care after that

2. Strongest track record for a small firm

Smokeball with Archie AI

3.5/5

Smokeball is case management with an AI assistant, Archie, that works inside the matter. In Outlook it summarises an email thread and drafts the reply from the file. In Word it drafts and edits documents. It answers questions about the matter and brings in LawY for legal questions, with the option of a lawyer checking the answer. It is the only product here that publishes a per-user price for both the system and the AI, and its site says plainly that the solicitor stays responsible for reviewing and approving the final work. It holds 4.8 from 360 reviews on Capterra UK.

Pros

  • AI drafting in Outlook and Word from the matter itself
  • Published per-user price for the system and the AI
  • States that the solicitor reviews and approves; 360 Capterra UK reviews

Cons

  • The AI is a paid add-on, so the real price is £118 a user
  • No scheduled client updates or chasing stated
  • VAT, contract length and migration cost are not on the page
PriceFrom £89 per user a month for the Prosper+ plan, plus £29 per user a month for Archie AI

3. Best for the phone and new enquiries

Moneypenny

2.8/5

Moneypenny answers the phone, with people, with an AI receptionist, or with both. The AI qualifies a new enquiry, books an appointment, routes the call and answers common questions from a knowledge base the firm supplies, at any hour. It says it works for hundreds of law firms and holds 4.8 from 1,311 Trustpilot reviews. It does none of the file work. The from-£25 figure and a line saying pricing is built around what you need sit on the same page, so expect a quote, and smaller schemes carry a three-month minimum.

Pros

  • Covers the phone, which no case management tool does
  • People available behind the AI
  • 1,311 Trustpilot reviews; long record with law firms

Cons

  • What £25 a month includes is not stated
  • No updates, drafting or file opening
  • Callers speak to the AI live, with no approval step

4. Best AI included in the subscription

LEAP

2.3/5

LEAP bundles its AI into one subscription at no extra charge. Matter AI answers questions about a matter from its correspondence, a prompt library and generator produce letters and emails, and LawY gives AI answers to legal questions that can be checked by a qualified UK lawyer. It has the second largest review count here, 547 on Capterra UK at 4.3. The subscription price itself is behind a form, which sits oddly beside the page's promise of upfront pricing, and nothing on the AI pages covers client updates, intake or the phone.

Pros

  • AI features included, not an add-on
  • Research answers can be verified by a UK lawyer
  • 547 Capterra UK reviews

Cons

  • No price published
  • No client update, chasing or intake feature named
  • Implementation and training are priced case by case

5. Best for drafted client updates in case management

Clio Manage

1.3/5

Clio is the most reviewed system here, with 1,748 reviews on Capterra UK at 4.7. Its site summary says AI comes as part of the plan and drafts client updates from real matter activity, flags risks, prioritises tasks and prepares billing. If that is as described, it is the nearest an established system comes to the client-update problem. We have to be careful: Clio's UK pages blocked our reader on the day, so the feature list is from the search summary of its site and we could not check which plan includes which AI feature. Open the pricing page yourself before relying on any of it.

Pros

  • Drafts client updates from matter activity, per its site summary
  • Per-user prices published in pounds
  • The largest independent review count of the six

Cons

  • We could not read its AI pages directly on the day
  • Which plan holds which AI feature is not confirmed
  • No phone answering or file-opening checks stated
PriceFrom £79 per user a month on the Core plan, with the two higher plans quoted; AI is described as part of the plan

6. Best for conveyancing title and pack review

Orbital Residential

1.1/5

Orbital reads the documents in a residential purchase together: the lease, title register, searches, management pack and property forms. It applies more than 300 checks, flags the risks, drafts the enquiries to raise and produces a plain-English client report in the firm's branding, exported to Word for a fee earner to review and send. It says hundreds of UK conveyancers use it. It is no help for probate or family work, and it publishes no price and no detail on links to case management.

Pros

  • Reviews the whole document pack and drafts enquiries
  • The client report is produced for review before sending
  • Built for UK residential conveyancing

Cons

  • Conveyancing only
  • No price published
  • No independent reviews found
PriceNot published

How we ranked them

What counted: firm jobs covered out of six (client updates and chasing, document drafting, legal research, intake and file opening, dictation and meeting notes, phone answering), up to 1.5 points: a quarter point each, an eighth for part of a job; set up for you inside the firm's existing tools (done for you 1.5, guided onboarding 0.75, self-serve or not stated 0), up to 1.5; a stated step where a person approves (here, a solicitor) what the AI produces, within the sector's regulated limits, up to 0.5; ongoing support stated (monitoring, named support or a service level), up to 0.5; a UK price you can read without a sales call, up to 0.5; independent track record (reviews with a count), up to 0.5.

We read each product's own product and pricing pages on 1 October 2026 and recorded what each says it does. Where a page did not mention a job, the table says "not stated"; that is an absence of a statement, not proof the tool cannot do it.

Clio's UK pages refused our reader on the day, so its AI features are taken from the summary of its site shown in search results, and its prices from our own reading of its pricing page for our case management price guide. We have not run trials of these products. No page we read stated where client data is processed in enough detail to rely on; ask for that in writing.

Each product's score is the sum of the six marks shown under its entry, rounded to one decimal place, and every product is marked the same way from what its entry records. Jobs: a quarter point for each of the six jobs its pages say it does, with AI or with ordinary software, and an eighth for part of a job; a job that needs a separate product, or a feature marked coming soon, does not count. Set-up: 1.5 where the supplier sets it up for you, 0.75 where it offers onboarding, training or migration help, 0 where it is self-serve or does not say. Approval: 0.5 where the pages state a step where a person approves what the AI produces, 0 otherwise. Support: 0.5 where ongoing support such as monitoring, named support or a service level is stated. Price: 0.5 for a full price in pounds on its own pages; 0.25 for a starting price, part of a price, a price in another currency or one found only on a directory. Track record: 0.5 for independent reviews with a count; 0.25 for a rating shown only on the company's own site, or customer numbers or named customers the company states itself.

Track record counts for up to 0.5 because these reviews compare what each product does for a small firm, not how big the vendor is. A tool with thousands of reviews still has to cover the jobs to score well, and a new service with none loses that half point.

This page is general information for firms choosing software, not legal or regulatory advice.

Questions people ask

What is the best AI tool for a small law firm in the UK?

On the pages we read on 1 October 2026, Smokeball with Archie scored highest: it drafts in Outlook and Word from the matter, publishes its price and says the solicitor approves the final work. LEAP includes its AI in the subscription but hides the price. For the phone, Moneypenny; for conveyancing pack review, Orbital.

What does legal AI cost for a small firm?

Smokeball is £89 per user a month plus £29 for Archie AI. Clio Manage starts at £79 per user a month with AI described as included. LEAP, Orbital and Lexis+ AI are quoted on request. Overlyft's set-up is priced after a fixed-price audit, and the agency publishes its fixed prices.

Is Lexis+ AI suitable for a high-street firm?

It is a research and drafting assistant that cites LexisNexis content such as Halsbury's Laws, with a 4.7 rating from 276 reviews on G2 per the search listing. Its page gives no price and does not say which sizes of firm it is for. It does none of the office jobs, so it sits beside case management, not in place of it.

What does the SRA say about using these tools?

The SRA's warning notice of 17 August 2026 says the firm remains accountable for work done through AI, every citation and assertion must be verified, and client information may only go into a system with contractual, technical and organisational safeguards. Ask each supplier where data is processed and get the answer in the contract.
