Best EPOS systems for UK pubs and restaurants in 2026

Seven till systems for an independent UK pub or restaurant, scored on jobs covered, review evidence, published prices and table and kitchen features.

Customers at the counter of a busy café

A till system sends two bills: a monthly fee for the software and a percentage of every card payment. The percentage is the larger one by a wide margin. A venue taking £30,000 a month by card pays £6,300 a year at 1.75%, and the dearest software plan we could price here is £1,800 a year. Even so, four of the seven systems below publish no card rate at all.

We scored seven systems on what their own pages said on 1 October 2026. The example venue is one site with two tills taking £30,000 a month by card. For each system we give the software cost a year and, as a separate sum, the card fee at the published rate. Hardware is extra in every case, and we say what each page charges for it.

Overlyft is an AI agency that can set up an AI assistant for restaurants, pubs and small hotels. It is not an EPOS system and it is not in this list.

1. Best for a low published card rate

SumUp Point of Sale Pro

5/5

SumUp's hospitality till publishes more of its price than any other system here. The £49 plan includes a floor plan that mirrors the room, split bills, tips, user permissions and an offline mode. The £19 Hospitality Module adds tab and table management and kitchen dockets, and a kitchen display screen is £19 a month for each terminal. Its Payments Plus plan, £19 a month or £189 a year, lowers the in-person rate to 0.99% on domestic debit and credit cards, which is £3,564 a year on £30,000 a month. The pricing page contradicts itself on whether premium and American Express cards also get 0.99%, so ask for the rate in writing.

Pros

  • Software price and card rate both published in pounds
  • Floor plan, kitchen dockets and a kitchen screen all priced on the page
  • 4.2 from 58,442 Trustpilot reviews, the largest count of the seven

Cons

  • Table management, stock and the kitchen screen are £19 add-ons each
  • The page does not say what a second till costs
  • No hardware prices on the Point of Sale Pro hardware page

2. Best for a free plan with table management

Square for Restaurants

4.5/5

Square is the only system here with a restaurant plan at no monthly fee, and that plan already includes table management, menu management and ticket routing to the kitchen. Plus adds a floor plan you can redraw, course and seat management, live sales reports, round-the-clock support and unlimited kitchen display screens; on Free each screen is £15 a month. The price covers every device at one location, so two tills cost the same as one. The page says custom pricing may be available above £200,000 of card sales a year. The example venue takes £360,000, so it can ask.

Pros

  • One price for a location however many tills it has
  • Card rate, plan prices and hardware prices all on one page
  • No long-term contract, by its own page

Cons

  • 1.75% is the highest published rate here, level with Zettle
  • Custom floor plans and course management need the £69 plan
  • 3.7 on Trustpilot, on a profile that covers Square as a whole
PriceSoftware: Plus at £69 a month for each location, with unlimited devices, is £828 a year; the Free plan is £0. Card fee: 1.75% of £30,000 is £525 a month, £6,300 a year. Hardware extra: Stand £99, Terminal £149, Register £699 and a 21.5-inch kitchen screen £549, each plus VAT

3. Best for a low upfront hardware bundle

Epos Now

4/5

Epos Now sells its till as a bundle: on the day we read it, a countertop till, a card machine and a receipt printer from £299, tied to a 12-month subscription from £54 a month. The offer price carried a countdown and another banner on the same site showed £149, so treat the figure as a starting point. The restaurant page states floor plans, ingredient-level stock, online ordering and links to Xero, QuickBooks and Sage. A kitchen display is £19 a month for the software or £49 a month with a screen. It describes one flat card rate but does not publish it.

Pros

  • 4.3 from 26,568 Trustpilot reviews
  • Kitchen display priced on the page: £19 a month, or £49 with a screen
  • Names Xero, QuickBooks and Sage

Cons

  • Card rate not published
  • The bundle price needs a 12-month subscription
  • Offer prices differed between pages on the same day

4. Best for clear per-till pricing

Lightspeed Restaurant

4/5

Lightspeed publishes three plans at £79, £149 and £219 a month and a flat £39 for each extra register, so a buyer can price two tills without a call. The till handles floor plans, coursing and modifiers, works offline and sends orders to the kitchen; a kitchen display is an add-on on Basic and one of the licence choices on Core. Reservations are an add-on on every plan, and QR ordering is an add-on on Basic. The payments page says the rate is the same for every card but gives no figure, and the pricing table lists it only as default or custom.

Pros

  • Plan prices and the price of an extra till both published
  • Floor plans, coursing and offline working stated
  • A UK Trustpilot profile of its own: 4.0 from 136 reviews

Cons

  • Card rate not published
  • No hardware prices on its hardware page
  • On Basic the kitchen display and QR ordering are add-ons with no price shown
PriceSoftware: Core at £149 a month with two licences is £1,788 a year; Basic at £79 plus one extra register at £39 is £118 a month, £1,416 a year. The page does not say whether VAT is included. Card rate not published. Hardware is sold separately and the hardware page shows no prices

5. Best for a kitchen screen and handheld in one plan

Toast

3.5/5

Toast is an American company that sells a restaurant-only till with its own hardware and a UK price list. Both plans list bill splitting, course firing, order and table management and an offline mode that keeps taking orders and card payments. Essentials bundles a kitchen display system and a handheld. The monthly price includes the subscription for the first terminal only, and the page says further devices cost more without saying how much. Card processing is described as a flat rate per transaction, with no figure. Its Trustpilot profile shows 2.8 from 1,487 reviews, and nearly all the reviewers on the page we read were in the United States.

Pros

  • Kitchen display and handheld included at £150 a month
  • Installation and network set-up included
  • Offline mode covers orders, printing and card payments

Cons

  • Card rate not published
  • No price for a second terminal or for hardware
  • 2.8 on Trustpilot, the lowest rating of the seven
PriceStarter from £80 a month, £960 a year, which covers the first terminal; Essentials at £150 a month, £1,800 a year, adds a kitchen display and a handheld. The price of further devices, the hardware cost and the card rate are not published

6. Best for a group that wants a UK specialist

Tevalis

3/5

Tevalis is a British hospitality technology firm whose pages are written for estates: its own example is a customer running 98 tills, 103 handhelds and 50 kitchen screens. The till page states floor plans with table transfers and merges, bill splitting, stock, central control of prices and user permissions, and an offline mode. Kitchen screens show delivery orders beside in-venue ones. There is no price anywhere on the site and no named accounting software on the pages we read, so a single-site buyer cannot compare it without a sales conversation. Its 4.4 on Trustpilot rests on 75 reviews.

Pros

  • Floor plans, table merges and kitchen screens all stated
  • Built for hospitality only
  • 4.4 on Trustpilot

Cons

  • No price of any kind published
  • Only 75 Trustpilot reviews
  • Pages are aimed at multi-site groups
PricePrice not published; quote on request. No card rate or hardware price on its pages

7. Best for a bar with no table service

Zettle by PayPal

2.5/5

Zettle, which its site says is being renamed PayPal Point of Sale, is a free till app with a card reader. There are no contracts or recurring fees, and one 1.75% rate covers every major card including American Express. The app tracks stock, sells gift cards, tracks staff performance and links to accounting software. The pricing and point-of-sale pages we read say nothing about table plans, kitchen printing, split bills or working offline, which is why it scores lowest here for a venue with a kitchen and tables. For a wet-led bar those gaps may not matter.

Pros

  • No monthly fee and no contract
  • One card rate for all major cards, American Express included
  • A new user's first card reader is £29 excluding VAT

Cons

  • No table plan or kitchen sending stated
  • Split bills and offline working not stated
  • 3.4 on Trustpilot from 5,737 reviews
PriceSoftware: £0, the app has no monthly fee. Card fee: 1.75% of £30,000 is £525 a month, £6,300 a year. Hardware extra: card reader £29 for a new user and £69 after that, Terminal £149, store kits from £169, each excluding VAT

How we ranked them

What counted: venue jobs covered out of six (split bills, stock or ingredient tracking, staff logins or clocking in, online or QR-code ordering, a link to accounting software, trading while offline), up to 2 points; independent reviews on Trustpilot (a rating of 4.0 or more scores 1 and a rating of 3.5 to 3.9 scores 0.5, plus 0.5 for 1,000 or more reviews), up to 1.5; a UK price you can read without a sales call (0.5 for a monthly software price in pounds, 0.5 for a card rate), up to 1; a table plan and sending orders to a kitchen screen or printer, each stated on the vendor's page and worth 0.25, up to 0.5; the total is rounded to the nearest 0.5.

We read each vendor's own UK product and pricing pages in a browser on 1 October 2026 and recorded what each says. Where a page did not mention a feature, the table says "Not stated"; that is an absence of a statement, not proof the system cannot do it. Features sold as a paid add-on count as covered, and the write-up gives the add-on price where one is shown.

We ran no trials. Yearly software figures are the monthly price on the page multiplied by 12, and we say where a page states that VAT is excluded. The card fee is the published in-person rate applied to £30,000 a month for 12 months. Where no rate is published we have not estimated one, and that system scores nothing for that half of the price point.

Review figures are from each vendor's Trustpilot profile, read the same day. Every profile covers the whole company, card readers and customer service included, not the till software alone, and on the Square and Toast profiles nearly all the reviewers on the page we read were in the United States. Two names a buyer may expect are left out: Storekit, whose pricing page describes online ordering that connects to a till, and TouchBistro, for which we found no UK pricing page.

Questions people ask

How much does an EPOS system cost for a pub or restaurant in the UK?

On the vendors' own pages on 1 October 2026, software ran from £0 a month (Square's Free plan and Zettle) to £49 for SumUp Point of Sale Pro, £69 for Square Plus, £79 to £219 for Lightspeed and from £80 for Toast. Epos Now starts at £54 a month on a 12-month subscription plus £299 for hardware. The card fee is the bigger cost: 1.75% of £30,000 a month is £6,300 a year.

Which EPOS system is cheapest for a venue taking £30,000 a month by card?

Only three of the seven publish a card rate, so only three can be compared. Zettle and Square's Free plan cost £6,300 a year in card fees with no software fee. SumUp costs £816 for software plus £6,084 at 1.69%, £6,900 in all. Square Plus is £828 plus £6,300, which is £7,128. A venue of this size can also ask for a custom rate: Square mentions one above £200,000 a year and SumUp from £10,000 a month.

Which EPOS systems work with Xero?

On the pages we read on 1 October 2026, SumUp names Xero and QuickBooks, Epos Now names Xero, QuickBooks and Sage, and Square lists Xero in its App Marketplace. Lightspeed and Toast say they connect to accounting software through partners without naming it on those pages, and Zettle refers to cloud accounting platforms in general. Tevalis did not state an accounting link.

Which EPOS systems send orders to a kitchen screen, and what does the screen cost?

Six of the seven state it; Zettle does not. Square charges £15 a month for each screen on its Free plan and nothing extra on Plus, and sells a 21.5-inch screen at £549 plus VAT. SumUp charges £19 a month for each terminal. Epos Now charges £19 a month for the software or £49 with a screen. Toast includes a kitchen display in its £150 plan. Lightspeed and Tevalis give no price.

Does a small pub need a full EPOS system?

A pub with no table service and no kitchen can trade on a free till app. Zettle and Square's Free plan charge no monthly fee and 1.75% on each card sale, and both track stock. A venue that serves food at tables needs the two things this page scores separately, a table plan and a way to send orders to the kitchen, and Zettle's pages state neither.

Is Overlyft an EPOS system?

No. Overlyft is an AI agency that can set up an AI assistant for restaurants, pubs and small hotels that drafts replies to booking and function enquiries, prepares the rota, drafts review replies and keeps the tips and allergen records. It takes no payments and holds no table plan, so it is not in this list and it would sit beside whichever till a venue chooses.
