What is AEO?

Answer engine optimisation: making a business easy for AI assistants such as ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, Copilot and Google's AI Overviews to find, understand and cite. Much of it is ordinary good SEO; the parts that differ are crawler access, clear answers and a machine-readable statement of who you are.

Are these tools really free?

Yes. Every check runs without an account, an email address or a key, in the browser, through the JSON API or through the MCP server. Answers are cached for ten minutes per address so a page checked twice in a row comes back quickly.

Do the tools check whether ChatGPT mentions my business?

Not yet. Asking the assistants themselves needs their paid APIs, so these tools check what decides whether they can read and quote you. A visibility check that asks the assistants directly is planned.

Can an AI agent use these tools?

Yes. Point any MCP client at https://aeolookup.com/mcp, or call https://aeolookup.com/api/aeo/ for the JSON API. The API documentation lists every tool, its inputs and an OpenAPI file.
