llms.txt validator and generator
Checks a site's llms.txt against the llmstxt.org format and tests its links, or drafts one from your sitemap.
Updated 30 October 2026
Generate an llms.txt
No file yet? The generator reads your home page and sitemap and drafts one for you to edit.
What it checks
- That /llms.txt exists and is a text file, not your home page served at every address
- The llmstxt.org format: one H1 with the site name, an optional "> " summary, then H2 sections of "- [name](url): notes" links, with an Optional section for links an assistant may skip
- Relative and http:// links, empty sections, missing notes and a file too large to be a map
- Up to eight of its links, tested, and whether llms-full.txt exists
Use it from code or an AI agent
The same check is a free JSON API and an MCP tool. No key, no sign-up.
curl "https://aeolookup.com/api/aeo/llms-txt?url=example.co.uk"MCP: add https://aeolookup.com/mcp as a remote server and call validate_llms_txt. API and MCP documentation.
Questions people ask
What is llms.txt?
A proposal from Jeremy Howard, published in September 2024, for a markdown file at /llms.txt that gives language models a short map of a site: its name, a one-line summary and links to the pages that matter. It is not a standard and no search engine requires it.
Do ChatGPT, Claude or Google read llms.txt?
Rarely, on the evidence. Ahrefs studied server logs for 137,210 domains in May 2026 and found 97% of about 38,000 sites with a valid file had no request for it that month. Google's John Mueller said in June 2025 that no AI system currently uses it, and Google does not support it.
Should I add one anyway?
If it takes you ten minutes, yes: it does no harm, some coding assistants and agents read such files, and the generator here drafts it from your sitemap. Do not expect traffic or citations from it, and spend your effort on crawler access and clear pages first.
What is the difference between llms.txt and llms-full.txt?
llms.txt is the map: names and links. llms-full.txt, where a site offers one, holds the full text of the important pages in one file, so a model can read everything without following links.
