Running the practice

Trainee dental nurses and the GDC's 12-month rule from 1 June 2026: the date each trainee must start a recognised course

From 1 June 2026 a new trainee dental nurse must start a GDC-recognised course within 12 months. Deadlines worked out for eight start dates.

A dental practice may employ a trainee dental nurse who is not on the General Dental Council (GDC) register, as long as the trainee is enrolled on a GDC-recognised course or waiting to start one, and a named GDC registrant supervises them. What changed on 1 June 2026 is how long the wait can be.

From that date, in the GDC's words, "all new trainee dental nurses must start a recognised training programme within 12 months of starting work". The old rule gave two years. Trainees already in post when the rule began have transitional dates, and those dates catch some practices out sooner than they expect.

The rule and the transitional terms

Trainee started work Must start a recognised course by
On or after 1 June 2026 12 months after starting work
1 June 2025 to 31 May 2026 1 June 2027
Before 1 June 2025 Two years after starting work, or 1 June 2027 if that is sooner

The GDC announced the change on 12 February 2026. It also removed its own requirement that a trainee finish the qualification within 12 months of the course's normal length, and left that to the awarding bodies.

The GDC does not register trainees and does not need to be told when a practice takes one on. It does say that registrants who employ, manage or supervise trainees "risk fitness to practise proceedings" if they do not follow its guidance. That means the risk sits with the practice owner, the practice manager if they are registered, and the supervising dentist or nurse.

The deadline for eight start dates

We applied the table above to eight start dates. The answer column is the last day for the trainee to begin the course.

Started work Deadline Why
1 October 2024 1 October 2026 Two years is sooner than 1 June 2027
1 March 2025 1 March 2027 Two years is sooner
31 May 2025 31 May 2027 Two years is sooner, by one day
1 June 2025 1 June 2027 Transitional date
1 December 2025 1 June 2027 Transitional date; two years would have been 1 December 2027
31 May 2026 1 June 2027 Transitional date
1 June 2026 1 June 2027 New rule, 12 months
3 October 2026 3 October 2027 New rule, 12 months

Three things stand out. A trainee who started in October 2024 reached the deadline on 1 October 2026, under the old two-year rule that still applies to them. Everyone who started between 1 June 2025 and 1 June 2026 shares one date, 1 June 2027, so a practice that took on several trainees in that year has one deadline for all of them. And the trainee hired on 1 December 2025 lost six months compared with the rule they were hired under.

Courses have intake dates, so the deadline is the last possible start, not the date to begin looking. If a course you want starts in September, a trainee with a June deadline needs a place on an earlier intake or a different course.

What the practice has to do

The GDC's guidance for employers lists the practice's jobs before and during the traineeship:

  • identify appropriate courses that lead to registration;
  • identify a supervising GDC registrant, who takes "full responsibility for providing direct supervision" and can delegate day-to-day supervision to other registrants while staying accountable;
  • give a formal, structured induction covering patient safety, confidentiality, infection control, safeguarding and medical emergencies;
  • keep the trainee's logbook "regularly signed off by the designated supervisor";
  • make sure the trainee does not carry out exposure prone procedures until they have the vaccinations needed;
  • "facilitate and support the trainee to complete the programme".

The DBS check is a separate job. Our guide to which DBS check a member of dental staff needs covers the level, and the DBS cost guide has the fees.

When the trainee qualifies

The guidance says that once the qualification is gained, "registration should be sought and achieved promptly". In 2023 the GDC said it saw no patient safety risk in a gap between finishing training and registering, provided the person "continues to be appropriately supervised and continues to be described as a trainee". It added that where the gap is "inappropriately long" it will act. Until the name is on the register, the job title stays "trainee dental nurse".

The first registration fee depends on the month the nurse joins, because the dental care professional year runs to 31 July. In the GDC's 2026/27 table it starts at £108 in August and falls by £9 a month.

Registers in First fee
October 2026 £90
January 2027 £63
March 2027 £45
May 2027 £27
June 2027 £18, plus the £108 annual retention fee
July 2027 £9, plus the £108 annual retention fee

The annual retention fee for dental care professionals is £108 for 2026, due by 31 July. Whether the practice pays it for an employed nurse is a matter for the contract.

A tracker for each trainee

For every trainee, keep four dates in one place: the day they started work, their course deadline from the tables above, the course start date once booked, and the date they apply to register. The CQC front-desk evidence guide explains why an inspector expects staff records like this to be current.

Overlyft can set up an AI assistant to hold those dates in the practice's compliance calendar and raise each one six weeks ahead. It enrols nobody and decides nothing; the practice manager or the supervising registrant checks each date against the trainee's contract and the course provider's letter.

This page is general information, not legal advice. A GDC-registered professional or the practice manager reviews anything a tool drafts before it is used.
