Black Friday and Christmas 2026 returns: the dates an online shop's 14-day and 30-day windows end

The dates the 14-day cancellation right and the 30-day faulty-goods right end for orders delivered from Black Friday 2026, with extended-returns wording.

Black Friday is Friday 27 November 2026, and an order delivered that day can be cancelled until the end of Friday 11 December 2026, two weeks before the present is opened. A shop that wants gift buyers to order in November has to decide in October whether to extend that window, and what the extension will cost in January.

Free tool

Christmas returns notice and dates maker

Set the delivery dates your Christmas extension covers and the date it ends. The tool writes the notice for your policy and a reply that works out one order's 14-day and 30-day dates.

  • Decide the extension and its terms before Black Friday week, and put the same wording in the returns policy, on the product page and in the order confirmation.
  • The extension is an offer on top of the law, so its terms are yours. You cannot make the statutory 14 days worse to pay for it.
  • The right to cancel belongs to the customer who placed the order, not to the person given the gift.
  • Both periods count calendar days. Bank holidays do not pause them.

The rule this rests on: Consumer Contracts Regulations 2013 regulations 29, 30, 34 and 35; Consumer Rights Act 2015 section 22. A draft to check and adapt, not legal advice.

The two clocks

Change of mind. Regulation 30 of the Consumer Contracts Regulations 2013 ends the cancellation period "at the end of 14 days after the day on which the goods come into the physical possession of" the customer. The customer then has 14 days from telling you to send the goods back (regulation 35), and you have 14 days from getting them, or from seeing proof of posting if that comes first, to refund (regulation 34).

Faulty goods. Section 22 of the Consumer Rights Act 2015 gives a short-term right to reject for a full refund. It lasts until "the end of 30 days beginning with the first day after" delivery.

Both count calendar days. Bank holidays do not pause them. Our returns rights checker works out both for any single order.

Read the middle column against Christmas Day. Anything delivered before 11 December is out of its change-of-mind window before the wrapping comes off. The right also belongs to the customer who placed the order: regulation 29 says "the consumer may cancel", and the person who receives a gift is not the consumer.

The faulty-goods column is kinder. A present delivered on 1 December and found broken on Christmas morning can still be rejected for a full refund until 31 December, and after that the repair and replacement rules apply.

One order, worked through

A customer orders a £42 item with £3.95 delivery on Black Friday. It arrives on Tuesday 1 December 2026.

  1. The customer can cancel until the end of Tuesday 15 December.
  2. If they tell you on 15 December, they must post it back by Tuesday 29 December.
  3. If they show proof of posting on 29 December, you must refund by Tuesday 12 January 2027.
  4. The refund is £45.95: the £42 price plus the £3.95 standard delivery charge.

So an order placed on Black Friday can lawfully be refunded as late as the second week of January, with no extension at all. If the item comes back worn or marked, our guide to deducting from a refund for a used return sets out what you may take off.

What a January extension costs

Take a shop with 300 orders delivered between 27 November and 24 December, at £42 each. These rates are our assumption for the sum; use your own.

  • At a normal 8% return rate, 24 orders come back.
  • If a window open until 31 January lifts that to 10%, 30 come back.
  • The six extra returns, refunded at the item price, cost 6 × £42 = £252.
  • All 30, at £42, are £1,260 of refunds, most of them falling due in January.

The extension is an offer on top of the law, so its terms are yours. You can refund the item price without the delivery charge, or offer an exchange or credit to someone holding a gift receipt. You cannot make the statutory 14 days worse to pay for it.

Wording to copy

Christmas returns. Orders delivered between 27 November and 24 December 2026 can be returned until 31 January 2027. This is in addition to your legal rights. For a return made after the normal 14 days we refund the item price to the original payment method, and you pay the return postage. If an item is faulty, tell us and we will put it right at our cost.

Put it in the returns policy, on the product page and in the order confirmation. Our returns policy template shows where each clause sits and why return postage has to be mentioned before the order.

Last posting dates: not yet published

When we read Royal Mail's Christmas page on 1 October 2026 it still showed the dates for Christmas 2025: 2nd Class on Wednesday 17 December, Tracked 48 on Friday 19 December, 1st Class on Saturday 20 December, Tracked 24 on Sunday 21 December and Special Delivery Guaranteed on Tuesday 23 December. Those are last year's. Do not print them on a 2026 banner.

Royal Mail's note on that page says the dates are "subject to change" even once published. Check it again in November, and set your own cut-off a working day or two earlier than the carrier's.

Bank holidays

GOV.UK lists Friday 25 December 2026 and Monday 28 December 2026 as bank holidays in England and Wales, then Friday 1 January 2027. Scotland and Northern Ireland have their own lists. The return periods above run through all of them. A dispatch promise in working days does not, so say in the order confirmation when you will next post.

What to do in October

  1. Decide whether to extend, to what date, and on what terms.
  2. Add the wording to the policy, the product page and the confirmation email before Black Friday week.
  3. Put 11 December, 25 December and 7 January in the diary, with the faulty-goods dates for your busiest delivery days.
  4. Set aside January cash for refunds on December sales.
  5. Re-read Royal Mail's last posting dates in November and publish your own cut-off.
  6. Have your late-parcel replies ready; our where-is-my-order reply template covers five situations.

Short answers from this page

When does the 14-day return period end for an online order delivered on Black Friday 2026?

At the end of Friday 11 December 2026. The cancellation period runs for 14 days after the day of delivery, so only orders delivered on or after 11 December are still inside it on Christmas Day. A faulty item delivered on Black Friday can be rejected for a full refund until 27 December 2026.

Every short answer for online shops

Where this comes from: Consumer Contracts (Information, Cancellation and Additional Charges) Regulations 2013 regs 29, 30, 34 and 35, and Consumer Rights Act 2015 s 22, read on legislation.gov.uk 2026-10-01; GOV.UK "UK bank holidays" and "Accepting returns and giving refunds: the law", read 2026-10-01; Royal Mail, Christmas last posting dates page, read in a browser 2026-10-01 (it still showed the 2025 dates).
