Putting it to work

AI visibility tools for small business: a free starting stack

Build a small-business visibility record from public-page checks, observed answers and publisher reports, with clear limits on what each free tool can prove.

A small business can start measuring AI visibility with free public-page checks, a query log and the publisher reports it already has access to. Choose tools that preserve the evidence behind a result rather than combining unrelated scores into one number.

This starting stack ranks functions by the decision they support. It uses documented capabilities checked on 30 October 2026 and does not claim a paid-product trial or a controlled accuracy benchmark.

Which functions belong in a small starting stack?

Priority Function and example Useful decision Evidence to keep
1 Public-page diagnostics: AEO Lookup Which access or content issue should be investigated? URL, dated result and explanation
2 Query log: a spreadsheet or local table What did a relevant assistant actually answer? Exact prompt, date, mode and source links
3 Publisher evidence: Bing Webmaster Tools Which supported experiences cite the site's pages? Reporting period, coverage and cited URLs
4 Broad snapshot: Ahrefs free checker What does a provider's sampled brand view show? Dated report and stated sampling limits
5 Referral and enquiry records Did observable visits become useful enquiries? Source where available, landing page and outcome

A business with mature publisher data may start at priority three. The order is intended to keep a new measurement effort small and understandable, not to declare one product universally best.

What does a technical checker contribute?

The AEO Lookup tools can inspect crawler access, schema, llms.txt and answer readiness. These checks can reveal issues to investigate before asking why an assistant chose another website.

Keep each explanation with the affected public URL. If a score changes after an edit, record the specific rule or page component that changed. That creates a useful maintenance record without implying that the score is market share.

The free checker comparison gives a narrower shortlist for a one-off diagnostic. Use the API and MCP documentation when repeated checks need to fit an existing workflow.

What should the query log contain?

Start with questions that prospective customers really ask. For an illustrative UK accountancy firm, separate a question about the firm's own opening hours from a non-branded question about finding an accountant for a specific service and location.

Record the exact wording, date, assistant, search mode where available and source URLs. Keep a screenshot or saved answer reference so someone can check what was observed later. Mark a name-only mention separately from a linked citation.

Use the measurement method to preserve those distinctions. A question that explicitly names the business tests recognition; it does not establish that an unprompted customer search would recommend it.

How do publisher reports and snapshots differ?

Bing Webmaster Tools describes publisher-side AI Performance reporting for Microsoft's supported experiences. Use the reporting window and actual coverage shown in the property, rather than extending the result to all assistants.

Ahrefs' free checker offers a limited brand snapshot. It can complement a local log, but it is not a substitute for testing the exact questions a small firm cares about.

Neither observation should be relabelled as a universal rank. A business can be cited on one surface, absent in another sample and still receive visits through a third route. Preserve the source of each number.

How can I connect visibility to useful business outcomes?

Record the landing pages and enquiries that available analytics can attribute. A referral record describes observed traffic; it does not prove every AI mention produced a visit. Some answers give customers enough information without sending them to the website.

Avoid collecting unnecessary personal details in the measurement sheet. Use a non-sensitive enquiry identifier and keep customer information in the firm's approved system. The measurement task needs to know whether an enquiry was relevant, not copy its confidential content everywhere.

For a UK firm, a small number of qualified enquiries can matter more than a large unrelated mention count. Define what useful means before reviewing the figures, so the success condition does not change to fit whichever chart looks strongest.

When might a paid tracker be worth considering?

First measure how much time the free process takes and which missing capability would change a decision. Scheduled prompt runs, history, exports and team review can have value when the manual effort is substantial.

Compare the actual ongoing allowance, supported engines, collection method and cancellation terms. A free trial is not a permanent free plan. Do not start a paid service merely to make a weekly report look more elaborate.

What should the weekly review look like?

Use a short record: technical issues opened or fixed, questions tested, observed citations, attributable visits and useful enquiries. Include the coverage and any missing data. Keep an unmeasured value blank rather than writing zero.

Review changes over several comparable periods. The aim is a repeatable decision about what to improve next, supported by real observations, rather than a claim that one small sample has measured the entire AI market.

Which questions come up most often?

Can I begin without buying a monitoring subscription?

Yes. Public checks, a dated query log and available publisher reports can establish a small initial measurement process.

Should I add every tool score into one visibility percentage?

No. Technical readiness, sampled mentions, citations and referrals have different denominators and should remain distinguishable.

Does missing data mean zero visibility?

No. Record the value as unmeasured or unavailable and state the coverage. Zero needs an actual observation with a defined denominator.
