AI readiness score: is your business ready for AI?
Answer eight yes or no questions to get a score out of 100 and your two biggest gaps.
Updated 30 October 2026
How is this worked out?
Each question you can answer yes to adds its points; the total is out of 100. 75 or more is ready, 45 to 74 nearly ready, under 45 early days.
| Question | Points |
|---|---|
| Most of your business records are in software, not on paper or in heads | 15 |
| Customer details live in one system (a CRM, booking or accounts tool), not scattered across inboxes | 15 |
| Your routine jobs (quoting, booking, onboarding, invoicing) follow written steps | 15 |
| You can name the three most repetitive tasks in your week | 10 |
| Someone on the team already uses an AI assistant such as ChatGPT or Copilot every week | 10 |
| One person is responsible for trying AI in the business | 10 |
| Your website answers customers' common questions clearly, so AI assistants can find and quote you | 10 |
| You could give a new tool two or three hours a week for a month to bed in | 15 |
The weights are our editorial judgement: the first three questions carry most points because AI tools need digital records and written steps to follow.
Where do the numbers come from?
- McKinsey Global Institute, The economic potential of generative AI (2023): activities taking 60 to 70% of working time are technically automatable
- IPPR, Transformed by AI (2024): 11% of UK tasks exposed today, 59% with deeper adoption; routine admin first
Every result is an estimate and a range. It shows the headline and the main points; the full breakdown for your business comes with a free AI audit.
Questions people ask
How do I know if my business is ready for AI?
If your records are digital, your customer details are in one system and your routine jobs follow written steps, you are most of the way there. This score checks those and five other things in under a minute.
What is the first step to using AI in a small business?
Write down the three most repetitive tasks in your week and how long each takes. Those are the ones to hand to AI first, and the time-saved calculator shows what each is worth.
Do I need to be good with technology?
No. Readiness is mostly about tidy records and clear routines, not technical skill. Firms with those in place can usually put a first AI assistant to work within a month.
What does a low score mean?
That an AI tool would struggle with your current set-up, not that AI is not for you. A week tidying records and writing down two routines raises the score and makes any tool work better.
