Will AI replace my staff? See how much of your team's work AI can take
Count your people by role and see how many full-time roles' worth of tasks AI could take on, and which roles change most.
Updated 30 October 2026
How is this worked out?
For each role it multiplies the number of people by the share of that role's tasks AI can do today, and adds them up as full-time roles' worth of tasks. It measures work that could move to AI, not people who should leave.
| Role | Share of tasks AI can do today |
|---|---|
| Admin, reception and office support | 40% to 60% |
| Customer service and phone sales | 35% to 60% |
| Bookkeeping, payroll and finance admin | 35% to 55% |
| Marketing and content | 30% to 50% |
| Professionals (accountants, solicitors, consultants, analysts) | 25% to 45% |
| Managers and directors | 15% to 30% |
| Hands-on staff (trades, care, kitchen, warehouse, drivers) | 5% to 15% |
Roles are ordered by the Department for Education's 2023 exposure ranking, which puts telephone sales and office roles near the top and hands-on trades near the bottom. The shares are our working ranges for each group.
Where do the numbers come from?
- IPPR, Transformed by AI (2024): 11% of UK tasks exposed today, 59% with deeper adoption; routine admin first
- Department for Education, The impact of AI on UK jobs and training (2023): which occupations and sectors are most exposed
Every result is an estimate and a range. It shows the headline and the main points; the full breakdown for your business comes with a free AI audit.
Questions people ask
Will AI replace my employees?
AI takes tasks before it takes jobs. For most small firms the result is the same team doing more, not fewer people: admin and customer-service tasks move to AI, and people spend the time on work only they can do.
Which jobs in a small business are most affected by AI?
Admin, reception, customer service and phone sales come first, then bookkeeping and marketing. Hands-on jobs in trades, care, kitchens and warehouses change least, according to the Department for Education's 2023 ranking.
How fast will this change?
IPPR estimated in 2024 that 11% of UK tasks were exposed to the AI then available, rising to 59% as firms build it in. The share AI can take grows each year.
What should I do with the freed time?
Put it where it earns: answering enquiries faster, following up quotes, looking after existing customers. The free AI audit shows which tasks to move first so nobody is left without work.
