Putting it to work

How to let ChatGPT find your Wix website

Inspect Wix page visibility and the Robots.txt Editor, preserve private areas, and verify the published response before treating a crawler check as resolved.

To make a Wix page available to ChatGPT search, publish it publicly and inspect any rules restricting the intended crawler. Check page-level visibility before editing the site's robots.txt file.

A page can be unavailable because it is private, members-only, password protected or excluded through page settings. Changing a line in robots.txt does not resolve every one of those conditions.

Which page should I test first?

Choose one page that the business deliberately wants new customers to find. Use its final HTTPS address, open it while signed out and confirm that the main information is present without interacting with a private account.

For a UK service business, that might be the public page explaining a particular service and its actual coverage area. Record the page title, final address and date. Keep a staging site or customer portal outside the scope.

Use the AI crawler checker to inspect the domain's public access rules. Keep its result beside the signed-out page observation so the person making the change can distinguish the two.

Where is Wix's robots editor?

The official Wix editing guide places the control in the site's dashboard:

  1. Open SEO & GEO.
  2. Under Tools and settings, choose Robots.txt Editor.
  3. Select View File and inspect the current directives.
  4. Make the authorised change, then choose Save Changes and Save.
  5. Recheck the file served at the primary domain followed by /robots.txt.

Keep a copy of the original before editing. The same editor offers Reset to Default if a custom configuration needs to be removed, but review the effect before resetting a file containing intentional restrictions.

Wix warns that editing the file can affect search visibility. A failed check should identify the specific barrier before it becomes a reason to replace the entire configuration.

What if I have never edited robots.txt?

Inspect the page's visibility and indexing settings first. Wix's guidance identifies those settings, password protection and members-only access as possible causes of an exclusion. A default-generated rule may reflect a deliberate page choice.

Situation Useful next action
Customer page is unpublished Review and publish the intended version
Page requires membership Confirm whether it should remain private
Page has an indexing restriction Review the page's SEO setting with its owner
Custom robots group blocks the crawler Review that specific group
Security layer rejects the request Investigate the rejection rather than weakening private access

Keep the distinction between indexing, crawling and authentication. A public file listing a path does not protect the information on that path. Sensitive content belongs behind appropriate access controls.

Which AI permission do I actually want?

Search discovery and model training are separate purposes. Decide the policy before changing an all-AI setting. Our general crawl guide explains which observations establish access and which require a later search test.

Read the final file rather than assuming the dashboard label describes every crawler's result. Record the relevant group and path. If an agency manages the Wix site, send it those details with the affected public URL.

Avoid adding instructions that try to force an assistant to recommend the business. Clear factual pages, accurate service details and working links give a reader something useful to assess.

When should I rerun the check?

After saving, inspect the public file and the affected published page. Wix notes that external search systems may retain a cached copy until a later crawl. A successful local change therefore does not prove that a search system has already revisited the site.

Check for unintended changes to another important public page. Keep the previous and current outputs together so a developer can investigate a discrepancy without guessing which version was live.

Use the answer-readiness checker after access works. For a UK installer, a direct explanation of the actual service, area and booking conditions can answer a customer question better than a generic AI-optimised introduction.

What counts as evidence of better visibility?

Log real questions and the URLs cited in the answers. Keep the date and assistant mode, and distinguish a mention of the business name from an actual clickable source.

The visibility measurement guide separates technical checks, observed citations and referral visits. A clean crawler result is a useful technical observation. Whether it produces a customer enquiry remains a separate question to measure.

Which questions come up most often?

Should I edit Wix robots.txt before checking page settings?

Inspect the page settings first. Generated exclusions can reflect visibility choices that a file edit does not resolve.

Can I reset a custom Wix robots file?

The Robots.txt Editor has a Reset to Default control. Review and save the existing configuration before removing intentional custom rules.

Does a successful checker result mean ChatGPT has indexed the page?

It describes the access check at that time. Indexing and actual citations require separate evidence.
