How to let ChatGPT find your Shopify store
Check Shopify product pages, robots rules and search access without removing the platform defaults or confusing open-web crawling with agentic storefronts.
To make a Shopify product page available to ChatGPT search, check that it is public and that the store's effective crawler rules permit the intended search access. Keep Shopify's generated protections when editing robots rules.
Open-web discovery is one route by which an assistant can find a shop. Product distribution through Shopify's agentic storefronts is a separate system and needs its own configuration checks.
Which storefront URL should I test?
Use the store's primary customer-facing HTTPS domain and an actual published product URL. Check it while signed out, including on a phone. A shop password, unavailable market or redirect can change what the visitor receives.
Record the final URL and the content actually shown. Product names, price conditions, availability and delivery information should agree with the store's current selling terms. A UK retailer should state whether a displayed price includes VAT where relevant, rather than relying on an assistant to infer the basis.
Run the AI crawler checker on the primary domain. Its rule assessment belongs beside the page test; neither replaces the other.
Where does Shopify keep robots.txt?
Shopify serves the public file at the domain root. Its editing guide explains the robots.txt.liquid template route. The default works for most stores.
If an authorised change is needed:
- Open Online Store and locate the relevant theme.
- Choose Edit code from the theme menu.
- Create the robots template through the theme editor's template controls if it is absent.
- Make a narrow Liquid change that preserves the generated rules.
- Save and check the file served by the published theme on the live domain.
A theme preview is not proof of what the published store serves. Keep the previous template so the change can be reviewed or reversed. Avoid replacing the generated file with a short generic allow-all example.
Which crawler permission am I changing?
Choose the purpose before editing a rule. Search access and training permission are different policies; the general guide explains that distinction.
Inspect the effective matching group as well as a wildcard group. Adding a permissive line in one place does not necessarily change a more specific group's result. Use the checker's explanation to identify the relevant section before asking a developer to edit it.
| Observation | Next useful check |
|---|---|
| Store password appears | Confirm the intended public launch status |
| Product redirects elsewhere | Inspect the final product and market URL |
| Explicit crawler restriction | Review the relevant policy with the store owner |
| Request challenged or rejected | Investigate platform or security controls |
| Access works but no citation appears | Review content and measure real search responses |
Do not expose checkout, accounts or administrative content to improve a crawler score. The goal is access to deliberately public product and help pages.
Does robots.txt control Shopify's agentic storefronts?
Shopify's documentation distinguishes open-web crawler rules from product syndication through Shopify Catalog to activated agentic storefronts. Treat a crawler result as evidence about the public web route, not confirmation that every commerce integration is enabled.
Check the relevant sales-channel and product eligibility settings when the question is whether a product is being distributed to a particular shopping experience. Preserve a record of the route you tested so a failed product feed is not misdiagnosed as a text-file problem.
Do I need to buy an llms.txt app?
Check the store's existing native files before purchasing anything. Current Shopify supports generated agent-facing files and theme overrides; our Shopify llms.txt guide explains their relationship.
A file can be present and well formed while an assistant chooses another source. The llms.txt validator helps inspect the file, with its result recorded separately from citations or sales.
What should I record after making a change?
Keep the date, theme version, domain, affected rule and before-and-after response. Recheck a product page and a useful delivery or returns page rather than only the homepage.
For a UK shop selling bulky goods, public delivery regions and realistic lead times may answer a customer's question more usefully than a generic paragraph about AI. Keep those details consistent across the product and policy pages.
Use the visibility measurement log for actual questions, citations and referrals. Access checks explain a possible barrier; the log shows whether the shop appears in the answers being tested.
Which questions come up most often?
Should I replace Shopify robots rules with Allow: /?
Keep generated rules and change only the policy you have identified. A generic replacement can remove useful platform restrictions.
Does a crawler check prove that a product is in an agentic storefront?
No. Open-web access and Shopify product distribution are separate routes that need separate checks.
Does Shopify require an app to have llms.txt?
Current Shopify has native generated files and theme override support. Inspect the existing files before paying for an app.
